Our Recommendations on Where to Eat and Drink in Luang Prabang

We visited Luang Prabang after a Slow Boat ride down the Mekong River from Thailand. We shared our time between strolling through the picturesque streets, participating in the activities and sampling the bars and restaurants I’ve written about below.

We ate at quite a few places over the week we were in Luang Prabang, but two places I’d strongly recommend are Taste of Ceylon and Luang Prabang Cat Café.

Our Top Recommendations for Where to Eat in Luang Prabang

📍 Taste of Ceylon

What made it special: Lots of choice, a lot of vegan/vegetarian options, excellent customer service, a good vibe, and just something a bit different.
The menu consists of traditional Sri Lankan dishes like Kottu, Biryani, and String Hoppers, etc. The curry options are varied - the beetroot curry is excellent.
We came here twice, and was greeted by the very friendly resident cat both times.

📍 Luang Prabang Cat Cafe

What made it special: Loads of vegan options, healthy food, and massive portions, including a delicious homemade tofu peanut butter baguette! I went back a second time just to have this again. The cats aren’t forced to be in the café - they just come and go as they please, and there is also a lovely dog who lounges around pretending to be a cat - overall, a nice atmosphere. Be aware, this is just a breakfast and lunch place (shuts at 4pm).

Our Top Recommendations for Where to Drink in Luang Prabang

📍 Red Bull Sport Bar

Despite its name, Red Bull Sports Bar isn’t a typical sports bar. It has a chilled out atmosphere, a beautiful garden, a pool table and some very good happy hour offers (buy a beer or Lao cocktail and get another one free - starts at 5pm sharp!). There’s a simple food menu; pizzas and burgers, plus some local Lao dishes. We had a couple of Margherita pizza baguettes which were quite basic, but just what we were after.

📍 360 Sunset

As the name insinuates, 360 Sunset is a great place to watch the sunset over the river. It is very laid back and has plenty of seating. A perfect place to enjoy a watermelon Somersby Cider and round off the day in front of the sunset.

📍 Mekong Sunset View Restaurant

This is another excellent sunset spot. We actually preferred the view from here, because you can watch the ferry transporting locals (and their motorbikes) back and forward across the river. It just puts something else in the picture other than the sun and the river.
